In an AI World, Authenticity Becomes Your Greatest Competitive Advantage

Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we work.

It can write articles, build presentations, create marketing campaigns, analyse data and even generate websites in minutes.

A lot of people are worried AI will replace them.

I’m not.

I think it’s changing what people get paid for.

For years, knowledge was the advantage.

Today, everyone has access to information. Everyone has access to AI.

So if we all have the same tools, what makes one person stand out from another?

I don’t think it’s the technology.

I think it’s the person using it.

AI Didn’t Replace My Job. It Changed It.

I’ve spent nearly twenty years working in senior marketing roles.

One thing people are often surprised to hear is that I was never a designer.

I always worked with talented designers, but my role was different.

I’d spend hours writing a creative brief.

Then another meeting explaining exactly what I wanted.

I’d wait a week or two for the first concepts.

Review them.

Request changes.

Wait again.

That was normal.

Then AI came along.

For the first time, I could take an idea from my head and turn it into a visual concept in minutes.

Not because I’d suddenly become a designer.

Because I realised I’d never been paid for my design skills.

I’d been paid for my thinking.

For understanding customers.

For seeing the bigger picture.

For knowing what needed to be created and why.

AI didn’t replace that.

It simply helped me bring ideas to life much faster.

If I were building a marketing team today, I’d still hire talented designers.

The difference is I’d expect them to use AI as well.

Not because AI replaces creativity.

Because it removes repetitive work and gives talented people more time to think.

AI Doesn’t Replace Experience. It Makes Experience More Valuable.

There’s a big difference between doing the work and knowing what work should be done.

AI can write a strategy document.

It can’t decide which strategy is right.

It can create ten campaign ideas in thirty seconds.

It can’t tell you which one your customers will actually care about.

That’s still where experience matters.

That’s still where judgement matters.

In fact, I think AI will make average businesses even more average.

Why?

Because everyone now has access to the same tools.

If your strategy, your messaging and your content all come from the same prompts, eventually everyone starts sounding the same.

That’s exactly what I’m starting to see on LinkedIn.

The One Thing AI Will Never Replace

One thing nearly twenty years in business has taught me is this.

Businesses don’t grow because of marketing alone.

They grow because people trust each other enough to make decisions.

I’ve worked with CEOs, founders, board members, agencies and graduates starting their careers.

The biggest challenges I’ve faced weren’t marketing problems.

They were people problems.

Building trust.

Managing change.

Aligning teams.

Helping people make better decisions.

Technology can make us more productive.

It can’t replace human relationships.

Why So Much Content Feels the Same

English isn’t my first language, and it never will be.

I still use AI to check my grammar because I want my writing to be clear.

Anyone who knows me also knows I still struggle with articles. It’s one of those Serbian habits I don’t think I’ll ever completely lose.

But I’d rather sound like myself with imperfect English than sound perfect and forgettable.

One thing that frustrates me on LinkedIn is how similar everyone sounds.

Words like elevate, leverage, unlock and resonate appear everywhere.

The funny thing is, I know some of these people.

I’ve sat in meetings with them.

I’ve had coffee with them.

They don’t talk like that.

So when I read their posts, I’m no longer hearing their voice.

I’m hearing AI instead.

And without realising it, they’ve made themselves less memorable.

Use AI to improve your communication.

Don’t let it replace your personality.

What I Really Looked For When Hiring

Over the years I’ve interviewed and hired a lot of people.

People often assume I carefully read every CV.

I didn’t.

The first thing I noticed was how it was presented.

Was it clear?

Well structured?

Easy to follow?

To me, that revealed how someone thought.

Within ten minutes of the interview I’d usually know whether we could work together.

Not because of their qualifications.

Because of how they approached problems.

AI can help someone write a better CV.

It can’t teach someone to think clearly.

Your Personal Brand Is More Important Than Ever

People often think personal branding is about posting every day or building thousands of followers.

I don’t.

Your personal brand is simply your reputation.

It’s what people think when they hear your name.

It’s what they find when they Google you.

It’s whether they trust you before you’ve even had your first conversation.

Ironically, I think AI is making personal brands even more important.

Because when everyone can create content, content stops being the advantage.

Your thinking becomes the advantage.

Your experience becomes the advantage.

Your reputation becomes the advantage.

Growth Starts With Clarity

Whether you’re launching a business, building a consultancy or developing your personal brand, AI can help you move faster.

But before you ask AI to write another post, another website or another marketing campaign, ask yourself:

  • What do I want to be known for?
  • What do I believe that other people don’t?
  • What experience do I have that nobody else can copy?

Those answers won’t come from AI.

They come from you.

And that’s where clarity begins.

Final Thoughts

I use AI every single day. Sometimes it’s ChatGPT. Sometimes it’s Claude. They’re incredible tools, but they’re exactly that, tools.

It has transformed the way I work and made me more productive than ever.

But it has also reminded me where my real value has always been.

Not producing.

Thinking.

Not creating more content.

Creating better ideas.

Not following trends.

Having a point of view.

AI helps me work faster.

It helps me communicate more clearly.

It helps me bring ideas to life in a fraction of the time.

What it can’t do is replace my judgement.

It can’t replace the relationships I’ve built over twenty years.

It can’t replace the experience I’ve gained or the perspective I’ve earned.

In a world where everyone has access to the same AI tools, your greatest competitive advantage isn’t AI.

It’s everything AI can never be.

It’s you.
